Second harmonic generation in powdered strontium barium niobate crystals

The work is devoted to the investigation of second harmonic generation of the radiation with 1064 nm wavelength in powders of strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystals, nominally pure SBN-61 and SBN-75 and SBN-61 doped with Nd, Ni, Cr and Cо ions. In the bulk SBN crystals the phase matching conditions for SHG of 1064 nm radiation can not be satisfied. Powders of SBN crystals with average size equaled to coherence length were investigated in the paper. The obtained experimental energy dependencies were well described by the quadratic law that corresponded to the second order nonlinear process. The efficiencies of SHG process in SBN with various compositions were compared at room temperature. It was found that the increase of crystal temperature resulted in the reduction of SHG efficiency that was due to the phase transition of the crystal from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase. The use of SBN for frequency doubling of laser radiation is discussed.
