Diagnostics of vortex structures in turbulent flows by PIV
The paper is devoted to description of efficiency of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to resolve large-scale vortices in turbulent shear flows. Principles of PIV estimation of velocity gradient in a turbulent flow and methods to extract large-scale vortices are presented. Several examples of results for a round submerged jet, including cases with swirl and combustion, are discussed.
