Structural and spatial organization of cells at different levels of metabolic activity

Using spectroscopic technique of attenuated total refraction (ATR) of polarized light in IR-region, we obtained the data on the spatial arrangement of biopolymers in situ in singular cellular layers and whole bacterial cells with different metabolic activity: vegetative cells, cyst-like forms, and spores. The spatial ordering of protein components and their distribution in scanned layers was established to be specific for the physiological state of cells, and this finding substantiates the applicability of ATR method in monitoring studies.
