Maximum likelihood estimations of Gaussian optical signal parameters with backgound noise accounting

The derivation of the system of likelihood equations for the optimum estimate of the optical signal parameters in the presence of shot and background noise is presented by the example of Gaussian pulse. The Cramer-Rao bounds have been found and the relative estimation error was shown to depend on two parameters: the ratio of the background intensity to the signal amplitude and the product of the signal amplitude and duration. The smaller the ratio and the larger the product, the better is the accuracy of the estimate.
